Filmadapsjonene fikk mye oppmerksomhet for deres iøynefallende kostymedesign. The Hunger Games trilogy (2008-2010) written by Suzanne Collins, has been made into a successful film series (2012-2015). The film adaptations gained much attention for their eye-catching costume design. As costume is of huge importance to both the film adaptations as well as the original novels, it is pertinent to explore the adaptive process of taking the clothing from the pages to the big screen. The aim of this bachelor’s thesis was to discuss how clothing is used for creating the identity of the main character, Katniss Everdeen, and how this was adapted to the films. Through five central scenes, this thesis found that two opposing sides, President Snow and the rebels, are fighting a battle of imagery and symbolism. In the novels, the two opponents force their desired identity for Katniss on her, mainly through symbolic clothing. The symbolic meanings of these costumes are also present in the film adaptations. However, the way in which Katniss feels used by others and not true to her real identity, is not as obvious in the film adaptations as it is in the novels.
