The original scope for this thesis was to test an aluminium-steel lap weld made with hybrid metalextrusion & bonding (HYB). However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent closingof the university’s lab facilities, this testing was no longer possible. During the planning of the tests, some problems became apparent. A standardized geometry for shear-tensile testing of welded lapjoints does not exist, and the HYB lap-weld have a geometry and material configuration that createsdifficulties conducting a shear-tensile test that gives sufficient results. Therefore, a finite elementmodel of an HYB lap-joint and three other models with different geometry were made. This wasto analyze the effects that different geometrical parameters have on the test result. In addition, different material configurations were evaluated in order to see the effect of changing the basematerial from steel to aluminium. The simulation results show little difference in the reaction force, however different results are seen in the deformations and stresses. The simulations indicate thatdifferent results can be expected from tensile-test specimens that are not similar in geometry andmaterial. HyBond AS should, therefore, consider producing a new lap-weld, with specifications thatcoincide with standards.
