Karstified formations are closely related to fragile wells and drained fractures, and can lead to severe drilling fluid loss situations when encountered during drilling. This can cause increased downtime and cost of drilling operations, and impose a safety risk for personnel and equipment at rig site. The research objective of this master’s thesis is to investigate and implement available algorithms in the literature with suitable characteristics for drilling event detection, that can be applied as plug-ins to drilling industry software Techlog and utilized for batch and online automatic fracture detection on field data from karstified formations. This report intends to describe the Adaptive Differentiating Filter, Connected Piecewise Linear Regression, Bottom Up and Bayesian Online Changepoint Detection algorithms - to evaluate them and compare their performance and conceptual qualities to propose the best approach for batch and online automatic drilling event detection. Results foundation for analysis originate from a two folded study case designed to first validate their general drilling event detection qualities of normal operations, and subsequently their applicability to detect more complex events in the form of fracture intervals. Bottom-Up for batch and Adaptive Differentiating Filter for online event detection are identified to be superior, as both perform with high accuracy and successfully detects general drilling events, and can detect fracture zones when there are clear indications in the data. Bottom-Up possesses functionality that proves to be highly applicable also for classification of loss and gain intervals. The Adaptive Differentiating Filter is preferred from other online algorithms as it performs with best reliability also on complex datasets, and stands out as more robust with less necessity of fine-tuning. Limitations of the research methodology are usage of interpretations conducted by Lundin for established event intervals for comparison, and that parameters set up in all algorithms can not be guaranteed fully optimized. This project is part of the cooperation between the Norwegian oil and gas industry and NTNU, reflected in BRU21, and carried out in collaboration with Lundin. Automatic detection and classification of drilling events are considered a big challenge within the petroleum industry, and impose great commercial opportunities for a comprehensively working algorithm.
