Brutårnene dimensjoneres i bruddgrensetilstand.
The objective in this master thesis is to investigate the possibility to build a suspension bridge over Halsafjorden. A suspension bridge of equivalent size has not been built in Norway previously, it is therefore desirable to investigate whether a project like this is possible to do. Most of the effort is put into the pylons. The goal here is to determine the necessary cross sections for the pylons to withstand the loads they are subjected to. Then it will be possible to estimate the amount of concrete and reinforcement needed to realize the project. The geometry of the suspension bridge is determined by scaling the relevant measures of Hardangerbrua, such that the main span becomes 2050 meters. This includes to find scaled cross sections of the separate parts, such as pylons, main cables, hangers and bridge girder. The suspension bridge is being analyzed with decisive load combinations from self weight, traffic load and static wind load. In addition, the pylons are being analyzed for a special case where static wind load is applied during the construction phase. The analyses are carried out with the finite element program Abaqus, where nonlinear geometric effects are included. The pylons are dimensioned for the ultimate limit state. This means that the cross sections have sufficient strength to withstand the decisive loads, but the requirements set by the serviceability limit state are not investigated. The analyses are carried out with C45-concrete and C90-concrete simultaneously. The cross sections are dimensioned with a separate and partly self-developed Excel program. This program includes nonlinear material behaviour such as plastification of the compressive zone and cracking of the concrete, as well as yielding of the reinforcement. The motivation to carry out the analyses with different concrete grades is to find out whether there exists a possibility to reduce the necessary amount of material used by changing the concrete grade. This question is answered at the end of the thesis, where the results are presented and the influence of concrete grade is discussed.
