The Norwegian construction industry has in recent years seen a growing demand for CLT (cross-laminated timber) constructions. Large public projects with goals of achieving low climate gas emissions has been prominent users of CLT in the building structure. Schools, kindergartens and student houses are examples of buildings where the usage of CLT has been increasingly popular. The CLT elements have a relatively high load bearing capacity compared to its weight. This makes the lightweight CLT constructions susceptible to transferring vibrations and sound with a low degree of attenuation. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the current status in the research of acoustics in CLT buildings and to assess the degree of which CLT satisfies the requirements of acoustical performance in buildings, as well as how one can achieve these requirements. The results in this thesis consists of a literature review within acoustics and CLT, and field measurements from schools built with CLT. Selected literature is mainly focusing on the airborne sound insulation and impact sound insulation properties of CLT floors. Field measurements are done at three schools constructed with CLT. The measurements are performed according to the guidelines from the standard series NS-EN ISO 16283. The presented data measures the airborne sound insulation and impact sound insulation between horizontally partitioned rooms. Measurement data from is compared with the information found in the literature review to look at the degree of which field measurement data correlate with data from the literature. The literature review showed that pure CLT floors will not be sufficient to fulfill the standardized sound insulation requirements for Norwegian buildings. Measurements and calculations of the sound insulation properties of such CLT floors resulted in values which were far from achieving the requirements of the national Building Acts and Regulations (TEK17). Additional layers on top of and under the CLT floors showed to be necessary in order to reach acceptable degrees of sound insulation. Hybrid elements with floating floors consisting of a concrete screed on damping interlayers showed to be a good solution. Flanking transmission from the CLT floors to the wall elements is also importance when evaluating the total sound transmission between the rooms. Elastic interlayers between the wall and floor junction reduces the vibration transmission significantly. From frequencies of approximately 400 Hz and up the improvement was significant. All of the field measured results showed that both airborne sound insulation and impact noise levels between vertically adjacent rooms in the schools was within the project requirements. The three schools all had floating floors with concrete screeds, sound reducing ceiling systems and elastic interlayers in the wall-floor junctions. For the floors with lower sound insulation requirements, the chosen solutions lead to the requirements being exceeded by a fair amount for airborne sound. The impact noise insulation requirements were not exceeded to the same extent. School buildings constructed with CLT will fulfill national sound insulation requirements if proper additional constructions are added. The sound insulation is dependent on using the right solutions and that the manufacturing process of these solutions is executed correctly.
