Abstract The main purpose of this Bachelor’s thesis is to choose the proper dimensions of the components of a microgrid based on a load profile. This system is then to be tested in a simulation software to check how reliable it is. Two cases have been researched. It is essential to verify if the calculations by hand and those from the simulation software are alike. This thesis has another goal, which is giving Gridville the fundamentals of a microgrid. It also covers the working method step by step of the project. The first case using only solar panels, is based on the local PSH-value, which is a measurement that indicates how favorable a PV-system is at a specific location. A PSH-value above 3 indicates the solar radiation is worth the construction of a PV-system. The chosen location has 4,7 PSH. The simulation in Homer Pro of the first case, shows good results each month of the year. The second case, with a small-scale wind turbine and solar panels, shows to be less profitable. The capacity factor is low, both from the simulation and the calculations by hand. The simulations presents that the wind turbine never use more then 40% of it’s maximum capacity. Low wind speed and air pressure influence the amount of energy induced into the turbine. According to the simulation, solar energy is the most beneficial and practical choice. Nepal has a considerable amount of solar radiation even during the rainy season. A hybrid system with both solar and wind energy is unnecessary as long as the battery package is well-designed. The results from different methods proved to be acceptable hence the small deviation. Based on that, is Homer Pro and the calculation presented in [1] tools Gridville can use.
