Begge er PaaS (Platform as a Service) løsninger av databasetjenester.
It is no secret that today's technology trends are moving towards cloud solutions. Data storage solutions are one of those areas that wants to be modernized by migrating to the cloud. This is reinforced by the endless possibilities that lie in the cloud and the benefits of having a database service in the cloud. Microsoft Azure is in many countries, especially in Norway, the leading cloud service provider and thus, is a relevant provider to know about. This thesis concerns the development of routines for seamless migration of databases to the cloud, focusing on the source server MS SQL servers to Azure SQL Database and Azure SQL Managed Instance. Both are PaaS (Platform as a Service) solutions of database services. The most prominent benefits are the reduction of the investment costs in infrastructure as well as less and simpler administrative work. The routines developed in this thesis are based on Microsoft's documentations, and the tools and services chosen to solve the task are those developed by Microsoft, which provides compatibility for both source and target servers. These methods are, at the same time, considered to be the most modern which provide opportunities for more automation, thus more seamless migration. Data Migration Assistant (DMA) is chosen to be used to assess the source databases to be migrated. This tool will provide insight into compatibility, feature parity and whether there is anything that will prevent the migration (Migration Blockers). Furthermore, this tool can also perform simple test migrations to the Azure SQL Database. Neverthless, the method recommended for production migration is to use the Azure Data Migration Service (DMS) which can migrate databases to both Azure SQL DB and Azure SQL MI solutions. This service has the advantage of being able to perform migration on a larger scale using PowerShell. In addition, there are opportunities for "online" migration to Azure SQL MI, which is the method that penables data migration with minimal downtime. The developed routines for migration with DMS are using both Azure Portal and PowerShell.
