Manual monitoring of grazing sheep

Abstract

Hvert år når norske saue bønder lar sauen gå ut og beite, så må bøndene gå på ukentlige inspeksjons turer for å følge med på hvordan sauen har det. Underveis på disse turene så må bøndene registrere hvor han/hun har dratt, observasjoner av sau (hvor mange og hvor), og også annen potensiel relevant informasjon. For øyeblikket gjøres dette for hånd med penn og papir, så for denne oppgaven så skal studenten utvikle en Android applikasjon som lar bøndene gjøre dette digitalt og delvis automatisk. Applikasjonen skal fungere både med og uten en data tilkobling, derfor er det da viktig at den har mulighet for å laste ned kart data på forhånd, og at data lagringen kan holde data lokalt på mobilen framtil en data tilkobling er tilgjengelig. Den ferdige applikasjonen skal bli testet via focus gruppe metoden, som inkluderer en usability test, en user experience test og et intervju. Fra dette i tilleg til forfatteren og veileders egen testing, vil en konklusjon bli tatt om den nåværende statusen til applikasjonen, hva som kunne vært gjort anderledes, og hvordan en mulig framtidig løsning vil se ut.

Each year when the Norwegian sheep farmers let the sheep out to go grazing, the farmers have to go on weekly inspection tours to look after the sheep. During these inspection tours, the farmer needs to record where he/she has travelled, observations of sheep (how many and where), and also any other potentially relevant observations. Currently this is done by hand with pen and paper, and so for this thesis the student shall develop an Android application to allow farmers to do this digitally and partly automatically. The application shall work both online and offline, and so it is important that it has the ability to download maps in advance and that the data storage system can hold data until the user is online again. The finished application shall be tested using a focus group based method, which includes a usability test, a user experience test and an interview. From this plus the author's and councillor's own testing, a conclusion will be drawn about the current state of the application, what could be done differently, and what a future solution could/should include.
