El Sistema is an organization in Venezuela, founded by José Antonio Abreu, with a goal of rescuing poor children and young people from poverty through music education and practice. The organization is recognized by many nationally and internationally. In Venezuela, they have 700,000 students, with plans to expand to 1,000,000, according to the website Sistema Europe. Despite the size and impact the organization has had on Venezuela and the rest of the world, there has been relatively little external evaluation of the program, so when critics, such as Geoff Baker, have looked at the program, many problems have emerged with how the organization operates. In this thesis I will review criticism of El Sistema from various sources, with main emphasis on perhaps the most important El Sistema critic, Geoff Baker. The thesis looks at how the organization's appearance does not correspond to how it is actually run. It first explains what El Sistema is. Then it goes on to criticize El Sistema's handling of their project on saving children out of poverty, among other things by looking at pedagogical tools the organization uses, and how the management of the organization affects this. Furthermore, the thesis looks at criticism of the organization itself, how it has worked its way up in Venezuela, how it controls the information about itself, and, with a critical eye looks at what kind of impact the organization has had on Venezuela and the world.
