Mean Music: En undersøkelse av diss tracks

Abstract

Denne teksten har som formål å finne ut hva et diss track er. For å finne ut av dette har jeg kombinert en forståelse av hiphoplitteratur med eget musikkanalytisk arbeid. Analysen vil fungere som et dypdykk i Eminems «Killshot», samtidig som den suppleres og utfordres av andre eksempler på diss tracks. Dette gjør det mulig å trekke slutninger om låtformens egennatur ved å identifisere estetiske og kulturelle trekk som er spesifikke for låtformen. Mange av disse funnene er også knyttet til annen hiphopmusikk, men er blitt tilpasset låtformen. Dette i kombinasjon med det teoretiske grunnlaget for hiphopmusikk hjelper oss med å posisjonere diss tracks som en låtform innad i hiphopmusikk, og ikke bare som en låtform uten musikkhistorisk, estetisk og kulturell sammenheng. I analysen har jeg også foreslått låtformspesifikke analytiske verktøy som kombinerer estetiske og kulturelle faktorer, og er lagd for å sikre de påfølgende konklusjonene. Forhåpentligvis kan disse brukes, og utvikles videre ved senere forskning på området.

The purpose of this text is to investigate what a diss track is. In order to achieve this I have combined an understanding of hip hop literature with my own analytical work. The analysis will serve as a deep dive into "Killshot" by Eminem, while also being supplemented and challenged by other examples of diss tracks. This allows us to draw conclusions about the nature of the form by identifying esthetic and cultural qualities that are specific to it. Many of these qualities are also linked to similar qualities in other types of hip hop music, but have appear to have been adapted and made exclusive to the form. This point, in combination with the theoretical understanding of hip hop music allows for us to position diss tracks as a form within the hip hop music genre, and not solely as a form without its required historical, esthetic, and cultural context. The analysis also contains suggested analytical tools that I have made specifically for the form which combines esthetic and cultural factors, and are ensure the validity of the resulting conclusions. These tools may hopefully be utilized and developed further in future research.
