Hvordan ser en synder ut? – En analyse av dommedagstavlen fra korskillet til gamle Hrog kirke

Abstract

"Hvordan ser en synder ut? – En analyse av dommedagstavlen fra korskillet til gamle Hrog kirke" er en bacheloroppgav i kunsthistorie. Denne oppgaven handler om fremstillingen av syndere i dommedagsfremstillinger, med utgangspunkt i dommedagstavlen fra korskillet i Horg, eide av NTNU Vitenskapsmuseet.

Oppgaven ser nærmere på sammehengen mellom den kristne, tradisjonelle forestillingen av kjønn, kropp og synd, og stiller spørsmål ved om framstillingen av synderne i dette verket fører videre det historisk tradisjonelle utseende av de fortapte, usalige sjeler slik de blir framstilt i bildetypens opprinnelige epoke; middelaldere, eller om det ligger et mer kjønsdiskriminerende kvinnesyn til grunne for motivets utforming. Hvordan kan man knytte hekseprosessene fra 1600-tallet opp mot billedmotivet, og om syndernes framstilling har noen mer underliggende rasistiske tendenser mot den etniske folkegruppen samene tillhører? Og er dette mulig å påvise?

Oppgaven inneholder også et par delkapittler hvor objektets grunnleggende museologi blir tatt opp. Hovedsaklig i hennhold til dets historiske sammenhenge med museet og hvilken betydning det har hatt der.

"What does a sinner look like? – An analysis of the last judgement day from the old Horg church" is a bachelor's thesis in art history. This thesis is about the portrayal and representations of sinners in the art historical motive of the last judgement day, based on the last judgement day from the old Horg church, now owned by the NTNU Science Museum.

This thesis takes a closer look at the connection between the traditional, Christian notion of gender, body and sin, and questions whether the portrayal of sinners in this spisific work carries on with the historically traditional appearance of the lost, unholy souls, as they are originally portrayed in the Middle Ages, or whether a more misogynistic view of the women underlining the design of the motif. Can the Norwegian witch trials from the 17th century be linked to the pictorial of the motif? And whether the depiction of sinners in this painting carries any underlying racist tendencies towards the ethnic group of the Sami people? And is this possible to prove?

The thesis also contains a couple of subchapters where the object's basic museology will be addressed. Mainly in relation to its historical connections with the museum and what significance it has had there.
