This bachelor thesis aims to explore how the construction of the gaze of both production, presentation and reception of film, is affected by gender. Through a close analysis of the movie Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Sciamma, 2019), I elaborate how the film challenges the traditional male gaze, making a statement through a female gaze. I further discuss how a female gaze affects the position of the viewer. The thesis is based on Laura Mulvey’s influential feministic filmtheory about visual pleasure in narrativ cinema, linked to other filmtheorists that both challenge and support Mulvey’s theory.
