Fortellinger om theravāda - En analyse av Wat Phra Dhammakāyas og Prayudh Phra Payuttos konstruksjoner av theravāda-ortodoksi i en thailandsk buddhistisk kontekst

Denne avhandlingen er en analyse av konstruksjoner, forhandlinger og hevdelser av ‘theravāda-ortodoksi’ i en moderne thailandsk kontekst. Med en diskursteoretisk tilnærming undersøkes to narrativ med to ulike presentasjoner av ‘buddhismens historie’. For å vise til hvordan narrativer presenterer og foreslår de to ortodoksiene vil sentrale konsepter, samt produksjon av mening, kunnskap og realiteter bli kartlagt og analysert.

Gjennom en presentasjon av Prayudh Phra Payutto og Wat Phra Dhammakāya, også kjent som Dhammakāya-tempelet, sine narrativ argumenterer jeg i avhandlingen for at det er behov for en ny tolkning av, samt tilnærming til ‘theravāda’ i det akademiske studiet av thai-buddhisme.

Ved å ta i bruk fremstille to narrativ får Payutto og Dhammakāya mulighet til å sortere buddhistiske grupper og elementer i tid og rom. Gjennom plassering av diskursive kategorier på ulike steder i ‘buddhismens historie’ rangeres konseptene på en skala fra ‘autentisk’ til ‘innovativ’ og fra ‘ortodoks’ til ‘uortodoks’ eller ‘heretisk’. I undersøkelsen av de to narrativene kommer to ulike forslag til ‘ortodoksi’ frem.

‘Theravāda-buddhisme’, slik det presenteres i Payuttos narrativ, er anerkjent som den vanlige, eller tradisjonelle, tolkningen av ‘thai-buddhisme’ og ‘theravāda-buddhisme’. I Thailand er han anerkjent som en taler for buddhistisk ortodoksi, men som analysen av Payuttos narrativ viser, har hans tolkninger også har blitt påvirket av en moderne historiediskurs. Wat Phra Dhammakāya har mottatt hard kritikk for å være uortodokse i sine tolkninger og sin praksis. I analysen av narrativet, eller flere narrativ, som presenteres av Dhammakāya vil jeg vise hvordan de hevder at deres egne tolkninger representerer den egentlige læren fra Buddha.

Hovedspørsmålene som stilles i avhandlingen er: Hva er det som gjør ‘theravāda’ til ‘theravāda’? Og hvordan konstrueres og legitimeres ‘ortodoksi’ gjennom fortellinger om buddhismens historie?

Abstract

This thesis is an analysis of constructions, negotiations and claims of ‘Theravāda orthodoxy’ in a modern Thai context. With an approach provided by discourse theory, two narratives with two different approaches to ‘the history of Buddhism’ will be studied. The negotiation of key concepts and the production of meaning, knowledge and realities will be mapped and examined to show how the narratives presents and make proposals of two orthodoxies.

Through presenting the narratives of Prayudh Phra Payutto and Wat Phra Dhammakāya, commonly known as the Dhammakāya temple, this thesis suggests the need for a new interpretation and approach to studying ‘Theravāda Buddhism’ in the academic field of Thai Buddhism.

The use of narratives enables Payutto and Dhammakāya to place Buddhist groups and elements in time and space. By placing these discursive categories throughout the ‘history of Buddhism’ the concepts are ranked from being ‘authentic’ to ‘innovative’, and from ‘orthodox’ to ‘unorthodox’ and even ‘heretical’. And through analyzing their narratives, two different suggestions to ‘orthodoxy’ emerge.

‘Theravāda Buddhism’ as presented by Payutto is usually regarded as the standard, or traditional, interpretation of ‘Thai Buddhism’ and ‘Theravāda Buddhism’, and in Thailand he is considered as a voice of orthodoxy. The analysis of his narrative will show how his interpretations are influenced by a modern discourse of history (modern history discourse?). Wat Phra Dhammakāya have received harsh criticism by Buddhist academics and the media for being unorthodox in their teachings and practices. In the analysis of the narrative(s) presented by Dhammakāya, I will show how they claim that their own interpretations, and their narrative, represents the real teachings as presented by the Buddha.

The main questions asked in this thesis are: What makes Theravāda Theravāda? And how is orthodoxy constructed and legitimized through telling a history of Buddhism?
