In this thesis, the sleep training method Cry it Out (CIO) is discussed about the child's emotional development and the child's attachment to its caregivers. It concludes that CIO might affect the child's emotional and cognitive development due to prolonged crying. It is also discussed that the child's attachment can be affected, since the method requires less responsivity from the caregivers. This all depends on the child's attachment to its caregivers, the child's genetic disposition and temperament. No definitive conclusions can be drawn, due to lack of research on the field. There will be discussed alternatives to CIO, like co-sleeping and a new method, that resembles a CIO method called "camping out", but which allows the caregivers to comfort their child.
