Spiralens rolle i skandinavisk bronsealder

Abstract

Spiraler er et av de vanligste motivene fra den skandinaviske bronsealderen. Denne oppgaven undersøker hvilken rolle spiralene hadde i bronsealderens billedverden, gjennom å se hvordan de opptrer i forskjellige kontekster. Selv om spiralmotiver opptrer ofte, er det gjort færre analyser av spiralornamentikken alene enn hva man finner med andre motiver fra perioden. Her gjøres det en komparativ studie av spiralornamentikken på Trundholmvognen, belteplaten fra Egtvedgraven og spiraler fra bergkunsten på Leirfall III for å se kontinuiteter og brudd i hvordan de opptrer. Tolkningen gjøres med semiotikk som et teoretisk utgangspunkt. Analysen viser at spiralene har hatt en viktig rolle i bronsealderens billedverden, men at de ikke alltid burde tolkes som solsymbol.

Spirals are one of the most common motifs from the Scandinavian Bronse Age. This paper investigates the role of spirals in the Bronse Age imagery, through looking at how they appear in different contexts. Compared to other motifs from the period, few analyses that focus on the spirals alone have been done, despite their frequent occurence. A comparative study of the spiral ornamentation on the Trundholm sun chariot, the belt plate from the Egtved grave and spirals from the rock art on Leirfall III is done to see how the spirals behave in different contexts. The analyses is done with a theoretical bakground in semiotics. The analyses shows that the spirals played an important role in the imagery of the Bronze Age, but that the interpretation of the spirals as representations of the sun, might not always be correct
