The purpose of this thesis is to examine the differences in terrorist activity in Yemen and Qatar. The states were both parts of the Ottoman Empire until they became protectorates of Great Britain. After they gained their independence in the late 1960s, the countries have moved in different directions. Qatar has become one of the wealthiest countries in the world, while Yemen has struggled with a growing presence of extreme poverty and deep divisions within the country leading several civil wars. Despite this difference in living conditions and economy, both Yemen and Qatar have gotten involved with the terrorist organisations dominating huge parts of the region. Qatar has been accused of funding terrorist activity abroad, and Yemen has been struggling to fight the terrorist organisations within its borders. The thesis uses the “root cause” theory as the foundation for the exploration of the differences. The main objective of the thesis is to answer the following thesis question: In how far can the “root cause” theory explain the differences in terrorist activity in Yemen and Qatar. Through this examination, several aspects of the theory will be explained and investigated. Some of the root causes covered in this thesis are the concepts of poverty, social inequality, and urbanisation. While the “root cause” theory can help explain the differences in domestic terrorist activity in Yemen and Qatar, it has its shortcomings when explaining why members of the top-layers of the Qatari society fund terrorism abroad. The thesis concludes that there is a need for further research on the topic of root causes of terrorism because knowledge of what creates terrorism is a significant factor in fighting terrorism.
