Bullying is hard to discover, and we know little of what lies behind a bully’s acts. The aim of this study was to gain an understanding of why bullies act the way they do. The focus has been set on children in elementary school. The thesis question is therefore as follows; "What lies behind a bully’s actions?". Through qualitative approach, three former bullies were interviewed on the actions they participated in during the time they went to elementary school. The interviews were conducted in retrospective perspective, due to practical and ethical considerations. In addition, this gave the informants a capacity to reflect on their former actions. Reflection was central to the purposes of the thesis. The results showed that the bullies explained their actions on status, power, and self-perception. In addition, there has been placed great emphasis on bullying in general, what bullying is, and statements of the informant’s former acts of bullying. Parts of the thesis has been based on Heinemann’s theories on social behavior, as well as the knowledge Roland and Olweus have presented about bullying. In addition, the thesis focuses on Lorenz’s theory on aggressive behavior, which anchors itself in both animals and humans. There is a strong focus on early research on the subject, as the term bullying is relatively unchanged. The central tendencies of the survey show that the children’s focus on status says a lot about whether they grow up to be bullies or not. This is because they are afraid of losing their status in their social group, and because they want to climb higher up the hierarchy of their group. In addition, this study shows that self-perception is an element that has a huge impact on whether children grow up to be bullies, and that the perception may change as a result of the child becoming a bully. Finally, it emerged that power plays a major role in bullying. This is both because the children who bully experience that they gain power, which they regard as positive, and because power is an important element for the implementation of the bullying acts. The results of the thesis also showed that group behavior, and social groups played a big part in the bullying. There is a focus on the work against bullying, and that it should occur in a preventive perspective. This is because it is very difficult to detect bullying if you are an outsider, and to protect both the bully, and the bully’s victims. Among the suggestions to work preventive, conversation and social referents were presented, as well as focus on building the children’s self-perception. The thesis is not intended to be generalisable.nb_NO
