In this master thesis I analyze differences in early retirement behavior for men and women. Focusing on which and how spurious effects can explain the variation in gender differences regarding early departure from the labor market, in the three following pathways: Contractual pension (AFP), ordinary retirement pension and disability pension. Because of an impaired selection problem, with a higher rate of employed women in the workforce, a renewed study in this matter is relevant. At my disposal I have data from FD-Trygd with information on Norwegian individuals between 49 and 74 years, followed from 2006 to 2010. The results of a multinomial logistic regression indicate that men have a higher probability to take early retirement such as AFP compared to women. Women on the contrary, have higher probability to take disability pension. I reveal that gender differences are due to different characteristics. However, ordinary retirement pension are in general gender neutral.nb_NO
