This thesis is an attempt to capture ethnic grievances in relations with regime type and secession. The unit of analysis is Yugoslavia on a regional level; Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovenia and Vojvodina. Conditions within these units are traced by applying thorough case-studies and fs/QCA. The truth table solution provided by the fuzzy-sets analysis support that ethnic grievances can determine civil war when appearing together with anocracy as a regime type, and with secession. This would support a claim that studies of civil war and ethnicity should aim to capture the political context in which ethnic grievances appear rather than to base the research on measures of the size of the ethnic groups or degree of diversity.nb_NO
