To increase efficiency in the production of distance heating in Oslo, a project is planned to upgrade and change some of the piping sections. This study will investigate if an innovative material other than the ones specified in the standards used by Fortum Oslo Varme AS (FOV) may be applied. This will create additional available choices when designing or redesigning piping sections used in combined heat and powerplants (CHP). When considering the use of a new material, the project first follows the requirements set by FOV through their own convention Fagstandard varmesentraler fjernvarme – Mekanisk to design a reference model in steel capable of use in the intended upgrade of Klemetsrudanlegget CHP. The convention specifies that design is to be in accordance with NS-EN 13480-3 Metallic industrial piping - Part 3: Design and calculation. Thereafter, the project considers the requirements contained in the convention in order to screen for a new, innovative material as a potential substitute for steel. The materials submitted for further assessment are a filled and an unfilled variety of Polyetheretherketone (PEEK). To judge the suitability of the new material, the further analysis utilizes NS-EN 13480-3 as a procedure to test the polymer against the requirements of steam piping design. The calculations in the standard are assessed and compiled in a procedure enabling consideration of the most important stresses. Due to the lack of standards aimed at this specific application for PEEK, the procedures fail to take into account all aspects of the material, and there are uncertainties relating to the required lifetime of the piping and creep stresses in PEEK. However, when subjecting PEEK to the abovementioned calculation procedures, the overall results show that the polymer passes the calculations according to the specified design stresses and pipe design required by FOV.en
