Women as witches? The portrayal of female characters in Roald Dahl´s The Witches (1983) and Nicolas Roeg´s The Witches (1990)

Abstract

Denne bacheloroppgaven undersøker hvordan av kvinnelige roller blir presentert i Roald Dahls The Witches fra 1983 og filmadapsjonen regissert av Nicolas Roeg fra 1990. Oppgaven diskuterer det kontroversielle innholdet fra boka og filmadapsjonen, og om hvorvidt presentasjonen av kvinnelige roller er kvinnefientlig eller mindre kontroversielt som en presentasjon av kvinner med makt og autoritet. Oppgaven diskuterer også om publiseringstidspunktet er relevant for hvordan kvinnelige roller blir presentert, og diskutere aspektene som forbød boken fra bibliotek i Storbritannia og USA.

This bachelor thesis investigates the portrayal of female characters in Roald Dahl´s The Witches from 1983 and the film adaption directed by Nicolas Roeg from 1990. The bachelor thesis discusses the controversial content from the book and the adaption, and whether the portrayal of female characters should be seen as inherently misogynist or, less controversially, as representations of women with power and authority. The thesis will debate whether the time of publication is relevant for the portrayal of the female characters and discuss some aspects that banned The Witches from libraries in the UK and the US.
