For to år siden, vant nesten Demokraten Beto O Rourke Republikaneren Ted Cruz ved senatvalget i Texas 2018.
Low turnout is a problem for democracy because the election results do not reflect the citizens preferences. Texas has been a one-party state since 1994 and Republican have always been the strongest one, where Democrats there tend to lose. Two years ago, the Democrat Beto O Rourke almost beat and unseated the Republican Ted Cruz in the 2018 Senate Election in Texas. O’Rourke’s campaign increased the voter turnout and led to records in vote rates in midterms elections in the state ending up with 71% of the votes by young people and Ted Cruz got 29%.This thesis will investigate and answer why there was a higher youth voter turnout in the election, examine various aspects of how O`Rourke campaigned in the 2018 US Senate election. Further, discuss why youth voted Democratic and compare turnout among youth and partisanship in the 2014 and 2018 US Senate Elections in Texas. This thesis suggest that the Social Identity Theory can explain the research question. Quantitative approach with a deductive logic is used, which can confirm or affirm the Social Identity Theory. VoteCast data and Exit Polls data were conducted as a primary source of data, further survey data on demographics, party identification and ideology. The data are collected from Exit Polls and VoteCasts conducted by CBS News, CNN and Fox News. Where other researchers have found that youth have no community commitment and interest, this research indicates the opposite.en
