Introduction: Suicide attempts and suicides are both major global health issues, which also applies to Nepal. Suicide attempts are a burden for the caretakers. The trauma of having someone you care about trying to end their life, may cause long time distress for the caretakers involved. Good care and information provided by nurses may help reduce such outcomes. The purpose of this article is to examine how the nurses oversee the caretakers need for information and care, when a loved one has tried to commit suicide. Method: Two semi-structured interviews were conducted in February 2020 in an emergency unit at a Nepali teaching hospital. The informants were nurses with 3 and 9 years of experience from the unit. The interview was directly transcribed, without video or sound recordings, and findings were thematically analysed. This resulted in four main categories, and eight sub-categories of the findings. Results: The informants were aware of the challenges Nepal face with suicide and suicide attempts. On average, the emergency unit experience 2-3 cases of such attempts every week. Nurses reported that taking care of and providing information to caretakers, was of low priority in their unit. The treatment of patients was considered most urgent, and lack of time and resources prevented nurses from providing the care they wanted to. Conclusion: Further focus and knowledge about the needs of caretakers are necessary to provide proper information and care that may reduce long-time complications. This study recommends that care for caretakers should be implemented in nursing education, hospital routines and in the nurse’s description. In addition, the hospital could increase nursing staff, so that more time is allocated to provide caretakers with the care they need.en
