The purpose of this assignment is to elucidate how and to what extent play and improvisation can play an important role in drama and theater work. To answer the problem I have tried to find relevant literature. I have also used qualitative research in the form of an interview. The informants' view of play and improvisation is that they believe both functions are important in both drama and theater work, but it appears that they may have some anxiety about making mistakes when using play and improvisation. What the informants conveyed is discussed against relevant theory. According to the theories, play and improvisation can be positive for imagination, creativity, socialization and dramatic ability.
