As a replacement for paper charts employed previously, most navigators today use ECDIS to support navigation. S-57 is the hydrographic standard used on ECDIS today. This standard is old and frozen, and as a consequence is outdated in several areas. To overcome this, there is a new standard under development, the S-100, which is due to be released within the next few years. This standard comes with new features and opportunities for navigators using ECDIS. This bachelor’s thesis examines whether the new features in S-100 can improve navigational safety in relation to S-57 in use today. Today’s standard has multiple functions which can be used for supporting navigation. However, there are some limitations tied to both the understanding and use of these functions. The S-100 series will provide more functionalities, but this will also require adequate understanding of their use. The group has chosen to describe four products in the S-100 series, in addition to the S-101 ENC base layer. S-102 Bathymetric Surface is a new layer in development, providing 3D-modeled, high definition bathymetrics. S-104 Water Level Information for Surface Navigation will provide forecasted and real-time water level information. S-111 Surface Currents will display visual information about surface currents. S-129 Under Keel Clearance Management will present water depth relative to the dynamic draft, using color codes. These new products are compared in relation to the old S-57 functionalities, to examine if navigational safety can be increased. Because these new products have not been released yet, a theoretical approach has been used to ensure that the conclusion is as correct as possible. The theory behind the products in the S-100 series is taken from the International Hydrographic Organization’s (IHO) product specifications, and the maritime regulations are taken from the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The products, as described in the product specifications, are discussed in connection with ECDIS-related groundings. Finally, this thesis will conclude whether navigational safety could be increased, by comparing the use of ECDIS in the groundings with the new functions in S-100.
