Introduction: Patients with PNES - psychogenic non epileptic seizures do not feel seen by the health care system. They experience not being believed, not getting the help they need, feeling misunderstood, being put on the wrong medication and often being misdiagnosed first. Living with mental illness causes negative experiences for the patient and can lead to impaired functioning and poor quality of life. Purpose: The purpose of the thesis is to elucidate the theme of PNES. As well as increasing competence on measures and how to practice nursing for PNES patients, to increase quality of life, sense of coping and reduce seizures. Method: The thesis is a systematic literature study with structured searches in the databases PubMed, Medline and Cinahl. We have also used articles we have accessed through contacting Hilde Nordahl Karterud who works at SSE. Five articles of both quantitative and qualitative research have been analyzed, evaluated and identified. Result: The results show that those living with PNES are also more likely to have additional diagnoses such as anxiety, depression and reduced quality of life. Cognitive behavioral therapy seems to have a good effect on both seizures, which is reduced and it improves quality of life because the symptoms of anxiety and depression decrease. Nurse attitudes and how they communicate with the patient are important. It also emerges that knowledge and individual mapping of the patient makes a difference. Conclusion: The importance of communicating the diagnosis in a "correct" way proves to be effective. By acquiring enough knowledge and lessons about the PNES, the nurse can guide and teach the patient in a good and empathetic way, increasing the quality of life and coping with the patient, which in turn can lead to a reduction in seizures and a better quality of life for the patient.
