Introduction: Large organizations such as Unicef and WHO work actively in mother-child health and maternity care in Namibia, which shows that this is an area within the Namibian health care system that has its challenges as it is today. As a nurse in Namibia, you are also a midwife, so you might face these challenges on a daily basis. Through my exhange studies during our last semester, I got to experience some of the challenges they encounter up close, and got to see how nurses perform the roles of being a caregiver and a counselor for the pregnant women. The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of a nurse's care in a new cultural context and setting. Method: This article is based on a qualitative study where data collection was conducted using structured and semi-structured observations and interviews at a public hospital in Namibia, as well as unstructured observations and conversations that have arisen spontaneously, and been recorded in the logbook used in practice. The research design has been exploratory, which has led to a change of theme and focus during the work. This is further discussed in the methodical discussion. Results: The findings of the study show that there are various factors that influence nursing practice and the possibilities of performing good maternity care according to WHO's definition. The health care system is influensed by resource shortages both in terms of material and personnel, while the need for help in the population is great. Despite these challenges and their busy days, the nurses express a desire to reach out and help even more women. Conclusion: The study shows that care can be expressed in many different ways. By utilizing the counseling situations to form trusting relationships with the pregnant women based on care and understanding, counseling during pregnancy checks could become a separate way of exercising care, thus contributing to good childbirth care.
