Title: How can the nurse alleviate existential distress in patients with palliative stage cancer? Aim: The aim of this assignment is to find out how the nurse can feel safe and take the initiative to meet patients who are experiencing existential distress in a palliative care setting, and to raise awareness about this topic. Method: The thesis is based on a literature study, where research, curriculum literature, other relevant professional literature and experience-based knowledge have been used. 7 research articles are presented. The research was found by systematic search in Cinahl, SveMed + and PubMed. Outcome and conclusion: Many nurses find it difficult to approach the patient's existential concerns and feel insecure and inadequate in these meetings. It is often the case that the nurse is afraid of not having an answer to the patient's questions, or that they find it difficult to accept what the patient brings. Studies used in the thesis say that teaching, skills training and counseling within this topic are useful and help the nurse develop better self-confidence and courage, and lead the nurse to take more initiative to meet the patient with existential distress. Findings from several studies show that creating a trusting relationship with the patient is an important foundation for alleviating the patient's existential suffering. Being present and participating in silence with the patient can be significant and help the patient open up. Keywords: Existential distress, nursing, cancer, palliative care
