In this thesis I examine what makes Ken Loach’s Kes (1969) a social realist film. Analyzing the cinematic devices that the director had used or abandoned, his method of choosing and working with actors and inspecting as well the documentary elements that Loach brought from his previous work for BBC to make Kes a social realist film.
