Munnhelse blir ikke godt nok ivaretatt. "Hvilke tiltak kan fremme sykepleierens ivaretakelse av munnhelse i sykehjem?"

Abstract

Introduksjon: En stor andel pasienter i sykehjem trenger bistand til å ivareta egen munnhelse, og forskning viser at munnstell er en sykepleieoppgave som ofte blir nedprioritert. Denne bacheloroppgaven undersøker barrierer for god ivaretakelse av munnhelse, og presenterer ulike tiltak som kan bedre sykepleiernes ivaretakelse av munnhelse.

Hensikt: Formålet med denne bacheloroppgaven er å belyse årsaker til at munnstell blir nedprioritert i sykehjem, og undersøke om det finnes tiltak som kan fremme sykepleiernes ivaretakelse av munnhelse i sykehjem.

Metode: Bacheloroppgaven er en litteraturstudie, som går ut på å systematisere kunnskap fra vitenskapelige artikler og annen relevant litteratur. Vitenskapelige artikler ble hentet ut fra systematiserte artikkelsøk i anerkjente databaser. De vitenskapelige artiklene ble vurdert opp mot relevans for problemstilling, og videre kritisk vurdert. Syv vitenskapelige artikler ble valgt ut, som sammen består av både kvalitativ og kvantitativ forskning.

Resultat: Gjennom resultatene fra de vitenskapelige artiklene blir det trukket frem forskjellige tiltak for å bedre ivaretakelse av munnhelse i sykehjem. Undervisningsprogrammer, fokus på sykepleierens deltakelse, tverrfaglig samarbeid og riktig valg av tannbørste blir trukket frem som mulige tiltak. Et fellestrekk for flere av tiltakene er kunnskapsutvikling og fokus på sykepleiers rolle i forbedringen av munnhelse.

Konklusjon: Tiltak med fokus på kunnskapsutvikling viser seg å ha en positiv effekt på pasientenes munnhelse, sykepleierens holdninger og valg av prioriteringer. Sykepleierens rolle viser seg å være essensiell i et tverrfaglig samarbeid og i utviklingen av tiltak for å bedre ivaretakelsen av munnhelse i sykehjem.

Background: Many patients in nursing homes need assistance with their personal oral health, and research shows that oral care is often given low priority by nurses. This bachelor`s thesis examines the barriers to good oral health and presents nursing intervention that can improve nurses’ ability to take care of oral health in nursing homes.

Aim: The purpose of this bachelor`s thesis is to highlight the reasons for the low priority of oral health in nursing homes, and to investigate whether there are nursing interventions that can promote nurses´ ability to take care of oral health in nursing homes.

Method: The bachelor thesis is a literature study and aims to systematize knowledge from scientific articles and other relevant literature. Scientific articles were retrieved from systematic article searches in reputable databases. The scientific articles were assessed against relevance to the chosen issue and critically evaluated. Seven scientific articles consisting of both qualitative and quantitative research were selected.

Results: The results of the scientific articles suggested various nursing interventions to improve oral care delivered by nurses in nursing homes. These include educational programs, focus on nurse participation, multidisciplinary collaboration and the correct choice of toothbrush. A common feature of the suggested nursing interventions is knowledge development and focus on nurses´ role to improve oral care for patients in nursing homes

Conclusion: Nursing interventions focusing on knowledge development have been shown to have a positive effect on patients´ oral health, nurses´ attitudes and choice of priorities. Nurse participation proves to be essential in multidisciplinary collaboration and in the development of nursing interventions to improve oral care delivery by nurses in nursing homes.
