Background: Approximately 80,000 people living in Norway suffers from dementia, witch is a major challenge since this figure is likely to double in the next 30-40 years. About 10 % of the Norwegian population have a hearing impairment and 60 % of these cases are with subjects rageing from 60-79 years of age. Research has shown both a connection between hearing impairment and cognitive decline, as well as possible mechanisms that may have an impact of the risk of developing dementia. Purpose: To raise awareness on what research and other literature says about measures a nurse can take in cases of hearing impairment to reduce the risk of developing demetia. Methods: A literature review containing seven research articles. Both qualitative and quantitative articles have been used, as well as one review-article. The articles were found using keywords like: hearing loss, presbycusis, dementia, hearing aids, risk factors and hearing impairment Result: The analytical prosess revealed seven themes: «The association between hearing impairment and dementia», «Hearing loss- a overlooked subjec?», «Nurse-led screeing», «Hearing aids preventive effect», «The use of hearing aids», «Social isolation» and «Follow-up and support from nurses» Conclusion: This literature study highlights that research and other professional literature views hearing impairment as an overlooked topic that needs greater focus. Based on the themes and four relevant nursing function, we have concluded with these nursing measures: nurse-led screening and documentation, information on hearing loss and coping strategies, maintenance of hearing aids, facilitation of good communication, information on available aids, initiation, management and information on support-groups, patient- and relatives support, follow-up of people with hearing impairment. Attention and increased competence of nurses is important in order to be able to implement these measures.
