Dermed vil tillitens betydning skyldes krisene. Tillitsindeksene bør derfor tillegges ekstra betydning ved store utslag.
The importance of consumer confidence as an explanatory factor of the household consumption has been a hot topic for discussion since the introduction of consumer confidence indexes in the mid 1960s. The results has been, and still are, mixed and uncertain of whether the consumer confidence are able to contribute with unique information regarding the future household consumption or not. In this thesis, I have used a number of econometric methods, including granger-causality and impulse response functions, to shed light on prediction of Norwegian household consumption and the importance of the national consumer confidence indexes in forecasting. It’s done by first evaluating the consumer confidence importance when trying to forecast the total household consumption. The results shows that there is a statistical significant effect between the two, also after other important variables are checked for. However, the effect is marginal, and in comparisons to other important factors explaining future consumption, it has very little economic impact. Then, I perform the same granger-causality procedure on each of the subsets of consumption, and find that the consumption goods that are more price sensitive, being the consumption of semi-durable and durable goods, are effected of the consumer confidence. Consumer classes that are less price sensitive, do not get affected by changes in the consumer confidence. Further, there is a second view amongst reaserchers that consumer confidence in a normal situation, in between crises, that there is no effect between the consumption and the confidence, but when larger shocks are observed in the confidence, the variable should be added more importance (Throop et al., 1992). To evaluate if the statistical effect shown between consumption and consumer confidence is due to the shocks, I am using a threshold model to ignore the shocks, and when doing so, the effects diminishes. Therefore, it’s no longer possible to use the confidence variable to forecast future consumption, meaning that the effect is due to the shocks. Consumer confidence variables should therefore be given more importance in times with greater volatility.
