Background: Sepsis is a growing problem in Norway and in the rest of the world. In Norwegian hospitals it is estimated that there are around 7000 cases of sepsis per year, and sepsis is the most common cause of death in intensive care units. Aim: The aim of this study is to discuss the role of the nurse in early identification of sepsis in patients admitted to hospital. Method: A systematic literature study that contains eight research articles. Results: Nurses are in a key position when it comes to early identification of sepsis, as the nurse through his or her observations can observe changes in the patient’s condition. Several studies revealed a lack of knowledge about sepsis and a lack of competence for identifying sepsis. Various learning methods such as theoretical and practical teaching, as well as simulation proved to be good methods for raising competence. The use of mapping tools is useful in nurses’ efforts to identify sepsis early. Conclusion: Nurses can contribute to early identification of sepsis in patients admitted to hospital by having good skills and knowledge, and by using mapping tools in combination with a good clinical view. Keywords: Nurse, sepsis, early identification.
