Purpose: The purpose of this study was to gain knowledge about the meaning of hope for palliative cancer patients, and how nurses can strengthen and preserve the patients hope. Method: This is a systematic literature study. Important results: In the analysis of the scientific research we found four subjects that was recurrent to all of the scientific studies. 1) Hope is a valuable trait in life, 2) To accept the approaching death, 3) Factors that affect hope and 4) Hope is dynamic. Conclusion: The meaning of hope is individual to each patient and change in correlation with the course of the disease. It is important that nurses are supportive regardless of the hopes phase. Hope can be a coping mechanism, a resource and a tool to find meaning during difficult situations. It is important that nurses help patients maintain hope to help prevent hopelessness. If nurses are slightly attentive to the patients well-being and physical needs, it can result to depriving the patients hope. Nurses must make themselves available and comfort both the patient and next of kin.
