West Coast Swing - Habitus og doxa i et sosialt felt

Abstract

Denne studien undersøker det globale West Coast Swing-samfunnet, som gjennom sin evolusjon har blitt påvirket av ulike faktorer som musikk, global vekst, økonomi, konkurranse og dissens knyttet til hva West Coast Swing er og hvor den er på vei. Noe som virker inn på kulturen, som diktere hvordan individene tenker, føler og handler. For en bedre forståelse av dette, benyttes sosiologen Pierre Bourdieu sin teori om kapital og sosiale felt.

Det teoretiske rammeverket gjør rede for begrepene; kapital, ønsket om å beholde eller øke kapital for å oppnå fordeler og/eller makt (økonomisk, kulturelt og sosialt). Sosialt felt, et felt hvor en særegen kapitaltype er verdifull som i denne sammenheng er West Coast Swing-samfunnet. Habitus, adferds og handlingsmønstre ut fra kulturelle faktorer og sosial samhandling, som legger føringer for hvordan man handler og tar valg. Og doxa som er de grunnleggende dominansforholdene og verdirangeringene i feltet som er taust og oppfattet som gitt (Østergaard, 2016).

I dette prosjektet ble det gjennomført deltakende observasjon fra arrangement og erfaringer som aktiv deltakende i West Coast Swing-samfunnet. I tillegg til tekstanalyse, hovedsakelig basert på podcasten” The naked truth, real talk about West Coast Swing”.

Studiens funn viser at den musikalske allsidigheten til WCS gjør at kulturen tilpasser seg det som er populært, noe som utfordrer doxa og kjernen til dansen, det vil si røttene til Lindy Hop og swing. Spennet i musikksjangere tiltrekker seg stor variasjon av mennesketyper, med ulik habitus som alle påvirker og finner sin plass i samfunnet. Og globalisering og en økende konkurransekultur gjør det mulig å leve av dansen. Og individene kjemper om symbolsk kapital på tvers av konkurranse, workshops og sosialdansing, hvor disse har en gjensidig påvirkning. Mengden og sammensetningen av kapital definerer hvor du befinner deg i hierarkiet og hvilke fordeler du har tilgang til.

This study examines the global West Coast Swing community, which through its evolution has been influenced by various factors such as music, global growth, economy, competition and dissent related to what West Coast Swing is and where it is heading. Something that affects the culture, which dictates how individuals think, feel and act. For a better understanding of this, is sociologist Pierre Bourdieu theory used.

The theoretical framework explains the concepts; capital, the desire to retain or increase capital to obtain benefits and / or power (economic, cultural and social). Social field, a field where a particular type of capital is valuable, which in this context is the West Coast Swing community. Habitus, behavior and patterns of action based on cultural factors and social interaction, which provide guidance on how to act and make choices. And doxa, which is the basic dominance and value rankings in the field that are silent and perceived as given (Østergaard, 2016).

In this project, I conducted participant observation from events and experiences as an active participant in the West Coast Swing community. In addition to textual analysis, mainly based on the podcast "The naked truth, real talk about West Coast Swing".

The study's findings show that the musical versatility of WCS enables the culture to adapt to what is popular, which challenges the doxa and the core of the dance, i.e. the roots of Lindy Hop and swing. The range of music genres attracts a great variety of human types, with different habitus that all influence and find their place in community. Globalization and a growing competitive culture has made possible make a living as a WCS-dancer. And the individuals are fighting for symbolic capital across competition, workshops and social dancing, where these all have a mutual influence. The amount and composition of capital defines where you are in the hierarchy and what benefits you have access to.
