The purpose of this thesis is to study the relationship between basic parameters and traffic accidents in the curve, as well as correlation between degree of curve and speed. When driving in the horizontal curve, several forces act on the vehicle and it will cause sliding inward or outward in the curve if the forces in the curve are not balanced. The use of properly founded values for road planning is an important part of road building. The significance of speed and friction, and horizontal radius is great especially in curves where the cross-section counteracts side forces on the vehicle. In order to carry out the work, a literature study of Norwegian and international about speed, friction, horizontal radius, superelevation, gradient, degree of curve, the forces in the curve, and connection between them has been carried out. The relationship between the height of the center of gravity and the vehicle's stability is examined in the task. In this work, consequences related to the center of gravity and the vehicle's stability have been investigated to see how these may lead to traffic accidents. The degree of curve is not mentioned in the Norwegian norms today. The task has included degree of curve as a topic and examined how the curve angle is related to driving speed. Two calculation methods have been used in the task. In the first method, the basis and values from Norwegian road design N100 are used to calculate the forces in the curve. Speed database from measurement stations and data from the Norwegian Road Database is used in the second method to check the correlation between degree of curve and speed. The study showed that sliding inward in the curve can occur with combinations of steep climb, greater horizontal radius and less speed, while sliding outwards in the curve can occur with less horizontal radius and greater speed. The superelevation did have much influence when sliding inward in the curve while it was opposite for sliding outwards in the curve. Without superelevation, the likelihood of sliding out of the curve is even greater. Based on the analysis between degree of curve and speed, a significant relationship was found. The results showed that there is a correlation between speed and degree of curve. Speed itself has a high correlation with the frequency of accidents. Therefore, one could conclude that degree of curve is significant for traffic safety.
