The Sexual Sublimation of the Ballerina: Gazing at the Gaze

Abstract

Denne masteroppgaven utforsker hvilke ideer den romantiske balletten representerer i henhold til kvinnelig seksualitet og femininitet sett utfra et feministisk perspektiv. Den undersøker representasjon gjennom både narrative og kroppslig uttrykk med fokus på ballerinaen.

Undersøkelsen er inspirert av hermeneutisk filosofi og forskningsperspektiv og er bygget på en kritisk diskursanalyse av utvalgt teori. Den utvalgte litteraturen representerer analyse og argumentasjon basert på psykoanalytisk og feministiske perspektiver og sammenligner de med litteratur som advokerer for en mer fenomenologisk tilnærming med fokus på den kinetiske opplevelsen. Sammenligningen og diskusjonen har som mål å utvikle forståelsen for hvordan balletten formidler ideer om kvinnelig seksualitet og femininitet og hvordan kroppen blir omtalt og brukt som middel i analyse av ballett.

Studien viser at en tradisjonell analyse av ballett basert på psykoanalytiske og feministiske perspektiver omtaler ballerinaen som offer og objekt i lys av patriarkalske normer. Studien viser at fallos som symbol på mannlig dominans gjenspeiles i teorien om ballerina-som-fallos. En strategi som viser seg og ha til hensikt både å belyse elementer i ballet som symboliserer stereotypiske kjønnsforskjeller og som samtidig forsøker å gi ballerinaen mulighet til å gi begrepet ny mening. Denne strategien problematiseres av forskere som ønsker et større fokus på den kinetiske opplevelsen av ballet. Det argumenteres for at teori som baserer seg på sammenligning mellom ballerina og fallos risikerer å opprettholde objektifiseringen av ballerinaen. En tilnærming som fokuserer på den kroppslig kinestetiske opplevelsen til både publikum og danser blir lagt frem som et alternativt perspektiv i analyse av ballett.

This thesis explores how the Romantic ballet represents concepts of femininity and female sexuality from a feminist perspective. It examines representation through both the ballerina´s body and narrative.

The study is carried out inspired by hermeneutic philosophy and research perspectives through a critical discourse analysis based on selected literature on the topic. The literature selected represents both analyses and viewpoints derived from psychoanalysis and feminist perspectives and compares it to material which advocates for a phenomenological approach with a focus on kinesthetic experience. It compares and discusses the viewpoints represented in the selected literature with an aim to expand upon the understanding of how ballet conveys concepts of female sexuality and femininity, and to assess how the body is utilised as a site for this analysis.

The study shows that a traditional viewing of ballet based on psychoanalytical and feminist perspectives perceives the ballerina as objectified and victimised by patriarchal ideals. The study shows that the phallus as sign and symbol for male-dominance is mirrored in the theory of the-ballerina-as-phallus. A strategy which serves to both prove the gender biased symbolism found in ballet and a means through which the ballerina can begin to take back control by appropriating the phallus for herself. This strategy is problematised by advocates for a redirecting of focus to a kinetic perception and experience of ballet. It is argued that an appropriation of the-ballerina-as-phallus ultimately reifies her as an objectified victim. An approach which focuses on the embodied experience of both dancer and spectator is suggested as an alternative lens through which ballet and the ballerina can be viewed and analysed.
