Today's AEC industry is developing more rapidly than before, and new tools and techniques have emerged. There are also higher demands on quality, as well as focus on environment and time- and cost efficiency. Increasing complexity is at the center, and this particularly affects the design processes due to an increased need for information structuring and good communication in an iterative and chaotic phase. Information and communication are termed key success criteria for good decision making and goal achievement, thus there is a close connection here. Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) is a concept that has recently emerged in the Norwegian AEC industry, yet there is little literature on how elements in VDC can potentially contribute during the design process. The thesis therefore examines the issue \textit{How can the use of VDC improve decision-making processes in the project's early phase through structured information and communication?}, highlighted through the following four research questions: RQ1: What are challenges and positive experiences with information, communication and decisions in the design process? RQ2: How can structured information and communication support good decision making? RQ3: What are drivers and barriers to decision making with VDC? RQ4: Which factors are key to achieving good decision making processes? To answer these questions, two qualitative case studies and a quantitative, online-based survey were used. In the case studies, both document studies, observation studies and six semi-structured in-depth interviews with key personnel were conducted. The cases have been exectued in Norway and Sweden. The research is inductive and interpretative, and is intended to highlight what works and what does not. The results show that the design process is centered around various forms of digital tools, and that the degree of success varies. This affects interdisciplinarity and collaborative design, including information availability, information structuring, server inactivity, interdisciplinary coordination and interoperability. It has also been shown that interdisciplinary collaboration with early contractor involvement, supported by Building Information Models (BIM), has positive effects on communication and decision-making processes by utilizing the collective and potentially broad knowledge possessed by the design team. Collaborative design processes, early involvement and BIM also affect the ability to jointly assess decisions, as well as defining common project goals. Moreover, trust and conflict reduction are regarded as positive outcomes. However, Integrated Concurrent Engineering (ICE) places demands on attendance of participants who possess relevant information and decision-making authority, and that individual work is carried out outside of meetings. The study argues that through the use of especially ICE and BIM one can create common goal perception, and that through visualization and discussions one can make well-considered decisions jointly. The collaborative design form can contribute positively through flat organizational and meeting structures that facilitate activation of silent knowledge. However, a digital infrastructure must be used for structuring of and sharing information, which facilitates interdisciplinary, collaborative design processes.
