This master thesis is structured according to two research questions; 1) What are the challenges related to TAT in hospital laboratories? and 2) What are the components of TAT, and what do they depend on? RQ1 is answered through findings from the case study and the literature study, which is used to identify challenges related to TAT in hospital laboratories. To identify challenges related to TAT in hospital laboratories, the challenges were associated with the phase they occur in. The phases of laboratory testing are diveded into preanalytical, analytical and postanalytical phases. RQ2 is answered by performing value stream mapping of three testing processes at the studied laboratory, and the value stream maps are used to identify the TAT components and their dependencies. The findings were further used to identify improvement actions of TAT. The methodology used to answer the research questions are analysis and mapping in terms of the process view, and the processes are presented through control model mapping and value stream mapping. The theoretical framework and background forms the basis to be able to perform a sufficient mapping and analysis of hospital laboratories and related challenges due to processes and connected material and information flows, and to suggest actions to improve TAT. The contribution of this project is insight to challenges and components of TAT in hospital laboratories. For the case company, a thorough mapping of their processes are provided through control model and value stream mapping. The project provides suggestion to improve TAT, and may serve as a foundation for further research of the topic.
