The purpose of this study is to explore how customers of IT services can lift their digital maturity in collaboration with suppliers. The interest in digitization is increasing, and how to utilize digitally mature suppliers to succeed with this process is therefore an important contribution. Empirical data from six companies in a purchasing process and one IT supplier are obtained through semi structured interviews with an abductive approach. The empirical material and theoretical foundation were developed and compiled in parallel. In addition to literature on digital maturity, literature on purchasing, asymmetric relationships and requirement specifications is used. The empirical material and theoretical foundation further lays the foundation for the analysis and finally the conclusion. This study shows that it is possible to measure and categorize the digital maturity of companies using 19 attributes and six organizational dimensions (analysis, culture, leadership, processes, strategy and technology). Three areas have been identified that companies can work with to facilitate collaboration with suppliers: (1) Formalize the purchasing process, (2) Specify supplier requirements and (3) balance the power relationship. Our findings show that IT suppliers prefer to work with digitally mature customers and that digital maturity can be lifted in collaboration with suppliers given the right conditions.
