dc.description.abstractWithin certain critical situations, as emergency and preparedness, access to communication resources may be needed by a selection of authorized people. The paper is based on that communication resources are often pushed beyond their capability in critical situations. To solve scenarios like this, people of higher positions in society may need to communicate with others. Such people could be mayors, head of water commission or other important people, which would be authorized by their position of society. Another example is when no other communication networks are present, like the September 9/11. NYCWireless proved then to be a useful alternative providing communication for the rescue teams. This master thesis studies and discusses different solutions for assuring access to Wireless Networks based on IEEE 802.11. The paper states three objectives: I. If or how it is possible to assure such access in WLAN. II. If IEEE 802.11 is suitable for such an application III. How this could be implemented in a Wireless Network like “Trådløse Trondheim” or other Community Networks. Furthermore, the paper introduces the basics of IEEE 802.11, MAC layer, different frame types and security in the objective of assuring access. As for assuring only authenticated people, different methods of solving authentication for such use is discussed in addition to those existing methods. This is needed because IEEE 802.11 does not provide any authentication on the first phases of association to an access point. The IEEE 802.11 also lacks an amount of security mechanisms for assuring availability of the network on both PHY and MAC layer. This leads to a vulnerability to Denial of Service attacks. Since a service of assured access is of no value when not available, this also must be addressed.nb_NO
