The theme of this master`s thesis is boys in upper secondary school and their experiences in a girl-dominated area of education. The research design is qualitative, and consists of 11 interviews with boys within the course of healthcare, childhood and youth development in Trøndelag. The problem of inquiry that has been addressed is: How do boys experience their everyday life within healthcare, childhood and youth development in upper secondary education? The thesis sheds light on several challenging aspects of being part of a minority, but also how development of fellowship in each class and course contributes to positive experiences between the participants. The study shows that the boys have compound experiences regarding their untraditional choice of a vocational study in high school. Though the informants find it unproblematic to be a minority in a girl-dominated program of studies, they also experience different forms of unconscious exclusion through everyday-interaction and the absence of other boys. They also address challenges related to constructed expectations and assumptions regarding the meaning of childhood and youth development, and what it involves being a boy within this area of education. The thesis calls attention to several positive aspects of being a boy within the studies of childhood and youth development. The most evident of these being interaction with others, solidarity and a meaningful everyday life. The theoretical perspective builds on an interactionist approach as it contributes to comprehension through the boys’ everyday interactions. Erving Goffman, Randall Collins and Arlie Hochschild are, among others, important theorists. These theorists emphasize that all social facts can be derived from social interactions, rather than from individual or institutional perspectives.
