The theme for this masters’ thesis is urban people’s experiences with the moving process to the countryside, and their arguments for doing so in a modern, globalized world. In addition, the thesis discusses their experiences with their new rural life. The research design is qualitative and builds on interviews with seven adults who has moved from a city to the Norwegian countryside. The following question has been answered: How do people experience the process of moving from the city to the countryside? The results of this study show that their decision of moving is based on a search for a life where calm surroundings, less stress and possibilities for spending time outdoors is prominent. Further I find that it is not only the idea of a calm and quiet life in the countryside that made them move. They also need concrete and stable living conditions such as work and favorable logistics. In addition, I find that they experience their rural life in different ways. Some experience the life in the countryside as calm and quiet. Which help them confirm their own choice of moving there. The newcomers that have interest in nature and outdoor recreation feel that they have come to the right place. Some of the newcomers claim that they are included in a network of like-minded. They build a community with others that also are interested in outdoor life, hence they also establish a sense of belonging to the rural community. This leads to an understanding of the locals as more passive, while the newcomers are active and exploit the possibilities in the area. On the other hand, other newcomers keep distance from this lifestyle and has not quite found their place.
