Abstract: Although there is a lot of existing knowledge about self-harming and its dynamics, women who self-harm are met with dismissiveness and unfriendliness when they are in contact with the support services (Mcallister 2003; Taylor m. fl 2009). There has been scarcely any research where women who self-harm participate as informants. The purpose of this master thesis is to gain some insight into how these women experience their contact with representatives from the health service/support services. It also seeks to provide an overview of how the women would prefer to be met. Qualitative interviews with eight women were conducted for this study. The focus of these interviews was to gain an insight into how the participants had been treated in their contact with psychiatry, somatic hospitals, NAV and other areas of the health system. The main findings show that the informants experienced both positive and negative contact with support service personnel. Negative experiences were characterized by a lack of respect. Support service personnel demonstrated this through unkind behavior, communication and actions. The women describe these actions as offending and insulting. Several of the participants felt that some personnel behaved this way because they wanted to punish them for self- harming. Many of the women mentioned that they didn’t experience being taken seriously when they asked for help. Specifically, they felt a great lack of humility and understanding about their chaotic situation. Positive experiences showed that the informants were met with respect by the support service personnel, which was demonstrated through their communication, behavior and actions. These meetings were characterized by the support service personnel being friendly, supportive, humble, warm and understanding. Specifically, did the women feel that they were respected when they weren’t treated as a “typical self-harmer”. They also mention that they developed reliant relationships with representatives from the health system. These relationships made the participants feel safe. The informants also expressed how they wish support service personnel would meet them and their situation. They stated that what is most important, is that the personnel treat them with respect, specifically, that they do not treat them as a “typical self-harmer”. One perspective in social work research is to look upon the individual in interaction with others, and it is not possible to meet self-harmers and their circumstances without a holistic understanding (Shulman 2003). This perspective forms the basis of the aspects that are discussed in relation to the findings. The results are also discussed in relation to the support service personnel’s and the women’s condition, which lead to the kind of treatment the informants receive. In conclusion, the findings show that it is not possible to meet women who self-harm without a holistic understanding. At the same time, it is essential that people who work with self-harm increase their knowledge about the phenomenon.nb_NO
