Abstract
This paper gives a brief introduction to IPv6, and continues with a discussion of the security considerations related to the implementation of the protocol. The issues described are relevant both to ISPs and campus network administrators. The Norwegian research network - UNINETT - is used in a case study. Native and tunneled IPv6 traffic has been analyzed to get an overview of current IPv6 usage. Some of the relevant security issues discussed in this paper are demonstrated in UNINETT's network and weaknesses are pointed out. Finally, additions to current packet filters are proposed to help reduce the risk of possible attacks.
