This master thesis covers an increasingly popular topic within the project management. The thesis aims to present how working in an alliance improves oil and gas projects. This was done by studying answering three research questions: (1) Why do organizations use alliance? (2) What are the hard elements of alliance and how they are applied? (3) How can the hard alliance elements realize benefits in soft aspects of alliance? We performed a qualitative case study, which included in-depth interviews with relevant personnel, document analysis, and participating observation. The data was structured in the Pentagon model, covering both soft and hard elements of alliance, and used for comparison of theoretical and empirical findings. The literature research together with the Pentagon model led to a theory-based framework to address the hard and soft aspects of the alliance. While studying hard elements and their application, we have identified the potential benefits they bring to soft aspects of alliance. We applied this framework to address and understand the principles and goals of case company s alliance. The research implication is an understanding of the alliance concept in the case company. The research scope was limited to one case company and adoption of its point of view. Since Det Norske is in very early stages of alliance development, several aspects were still undergoing changes or not completely determined. This limited our possibilities as we could only grasp the already established aspects and expected outcomes. The theoretical contribution of the research is reducing the gap between theory and practise, and providing new theoretical insights, which contributes to better understanding of alliance. The thesis provides a new understanding how hard alliance elements can be applied in order to achieve certain benefits. This allows practitioners to assess how hard elements contribute with the desired goals regarding the soft aspects of alliance.en
