The purpose of this thesis was to evaluate the possibility of using aluminum as the main material to improve the flood protection system developed by Aquafence AS. The main focus was on the structural integrity of the product, high volume production methods and product weight. The project work was carried out using acknowledged early stage product development methods to structure the development process, and finite element analysis (FEA) to evaluate the structural integrity of the concepts. The project resulted in two designs based on very different principles. The first design is based on extruded aluminum profiles joined through friction stir welding. The second design is based on corrugated aluminum plates combined with extruded profiles. The profile based concept focuses on modularity, function and automated production methods, while the plate based concept is to a larger degree designed with low weight as the main design parameter.en
