Background: 75% (n=583) of families with children diagnosed with diabetes, reported great stress due to the diagnosis. Aim: The purpose of the study is to find research to show how nurses can provide good care to the family as a whole, when a child is diagnosed with diabetes. Method: Five scientific articles are used in this study to highlight the approach to the thesis question in the best possible manner. Different keywords were used in the databases such as Medline, Cinahl and SveMed+. Articles chosen were critically evaluated by the assistance of the CASP checklist, and analyzed through thematic analysis. Results: The results are divided into six categories presenting how nurses can provide useful care to the family of the newly diagnosed child. The categories are 1) the participation of the family in the child’s everyday life, 2) establish relations and the importance of family, 3) instruction and guidance, 4) listen and let the family show their emotions, 5) clear and consistent communication with the family, and 6) maintain a professional attitude and establish interdisciplinary cooperation. Conclusion: People are affected differently by various measures. It is not possible to execute one plan serving as a solution for all families, but the aforementioned measures are proved useful to provide high quality care to affected families.
