dc.description.abstract | Background: The palliative phase contains a lot of physical and mental distress, and palliative
patients may suffer from different mental pain, such as anxiety and depression. Nurses working in
home care has a big role in assessing, managing and reliving anxiety and depression in this patient
group. To be able to relieve anxiety and depression in palliative patients, it is important that nurses
has adequate knowledge.
Aim: The purpose of this literature study is to investigate how nurses can relieve anxiety and
depression in palliative patients at home, using research and literature on the subject.
Method: Literature review. Study and interpretation of literature dealing with a particular theme.
After structured searches in databases, 8 scientific articles were included and analyzed to give an
answer to the issue of this subject.
Result: The findings from selected scientific articles and relevant academic literature on topics
result in thematic headlines that can provide answers to the problem. The theme headings are:
Anxiety and depression in palliative patients, the role of nursing in the relief, treatment and
assessment of anxiety and depression, medical- and non-medical relief and treatment
Conclusion: Several factors affect how nursing can relieve anxiety and depression in palliative
patients. Some of the challenges are lack of assessment and discovery and enlightenment on the
issue. Different approaches can be used in relieving anxiety and depression in palliative patients,
and they need to be individualized for each patient.
