Background: In Norway, alcohol is one of the most common drugs and the abuse is steadily increasing. At the same time, the age of the Norwegian population increases. Elderly today have doubled alcohol consumption compared to a few decades ago. This will result in more patients with substantial abuse problems receiving home care. This development is dependent on a restructuring of the health sector with focus on increased expertise, recruitment and good management. Aim: To elucidate factors that affect nursing in order to care for the elderly alcoholic patient and to motivate changes in harmful alcohol habits. How attitudes and knowledge of the employees in the home nursing care affect the care of this patient group. Method: This literature study is based on scientific and research-based knowledge. Structured searches were carried out in Medline, Swemed, Pubmed, Cinahl and Idunn. 5 research articles were selected. Results: Research shows that lack of knowledge about alcohol problems and stigmatization of the patient group leads to poor attitudes and uncertainty among the employees. This means that conversations about, and mapping of alcohol consumption often is absent or fails. For the patients to receive safe, comprehensive and good quality services the competence must be improved. Conclusion: Lack of knowledge and attitudes may obstruct giving this patient group the help they need. Knowledge about alcohol and addiction issues can change the health personnel's attitudes and destigmate the patients. Mapping tools adapted to this age group must be developed and implemented to uncover alcohol problems. This will make it natural to have a conversation about alcohol with the patients.
